We hear from Dr Allie Wagener, sports psychologist at the Human Powered Health team about her work. Plus we hear from General Manager Ro de Jonckere and rider Ruth Edwards about the ongoing influence sports psychology has on the workings of the team both on and off the bike.

The Cycling Podcast Féminin team also pick over the European Championships road race and debate the merits of that surprise World Championships win in the first regular episode since the race.

Last October, Lionel Birnie and Simon Gill went to Leuven in Belgium for the third edition of the UCI Gravel World Championships.

They'd made the journey across the channel to the Flanders Classics many times but this was their first trip to a gravel race and they were keen to see what this overnight sensation (which was more than a century in the making) was all about.

They meander through the history of gravel racing, examine where gravel and road converge, and take part in the Rainbow Gravel Ride, the sportive for amateur riders held on the finishing loop of the World Championship course.

In this episode we hear from two American riders, Ian Boswell and Larry Warbasse, about their experiences of gravel racing, Colin Clews, the organiser of the Cicle Classic in Britain – a road race with gravel that preceded the current trend by a decade or so – and Connor Swift, who was in the thick of the racing in Leuven.

The autumn season rolled on with the European road race championships at the weekend - and report back from a men’s road race dominated in familiar fashion by Tadej Pogačar, but also lit up by a French teenager riding and starring on home roads, Paul Seixas. 

Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie are joined by the voice of Radio Tour, Seb Piquet, to analyse Pog’s latest masterclass and what’s next for Seixas. The inaugural UCI road World Championships on the continent of Africa took place in Rwanda last week. Dominated - again - by Tadej Pogačar, the men’s road race was widely dubbed ‘the hardest edition ever’, but was it really? Team USA’s Larry Warbasse joins Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie to give his verdict and general impressions from Kigali. 

We also solve the mystery of Nauru’s first ever World Championship entrant - who didn’t make it to the start-line. S13 Ep140: The Call of Kigali

Listen up class! The Cycling Podcast Féminin has returned after our post Tour de France Femmes summer break and we have that back-to-school feeling.

Rose Manley, Denny Gray and Rebecca Charlton tackle some enticing subjects after a number of contentious topics have arisen over recent weeks. We discuss weight loss in cycling, the disqualification of five teams at the Tour de Romandie, Lorena Wiebes’ continued domination and we look ahead to the World Championships in Rwanda.

We broach the furore surrounding Pauline Ferrand Prevot’s four kilogram weight loss in preparation for her victorious Tour de France Femmes campaign and delve further into the conversations around health, weight and disordered eating that have been brought up in the weeks since.

In technology (or as Denny says, should it be politics?) we talk about the disqualification of five major teams at the Tour de Romandie after refusing to pick a rider to trial the UCI’s new GPS tracking system. The teams – Visma Lease-a-Bike, Canyon SRAM, EF Education Oatly, Picnic Post NL and Lidl Trek – wanted the UCI to choose the riders, citing that mounting the 60 gram tracker would put that rider at a disadvantage. The UCI refused and disqualified the teams before the start of the race. The fall out has raised a number of questions over safety, stakeholder rights, the commercialisation of cycling and data usage and ownership, all of which we go into here.

In geography, we cast our eyes over the upcoming World Championships route in Rwanda, centred around the capital city of Kigali. The race is notable not just for being the first time that the World Championships have been held in Africa but also for promising some dramatic racing on a climb-packed course.

Also on the agenda: the debating club champion debates with herself and the odd things Denny used to do at the back of the bus with a protractor… or should that be a pair of compasses…

We’re looking at life a little upside down in the first Cycling Podcast Feminin of the year. Special guest cycling journalist Rebecca Charlton joins Rose Manley and Denny Gray to look over the first Women’s World Tour race of the year – the Tour Down Under in Australia.

We analyse the veracity of overall winner Sarah Gigante’s claims that she was “washed up” at the age of 23 and all get into a hotly-fought argument over Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig’s prospects for the year.

We’re also introducing the first in our year-long series of mini features. In this month’s episode we look into the current crop of talented New Zealand racers and ask what’s behind the sudden rise in Kiwi riders. Rose speaks to World Tour talents Niamh Fisher-Black and Mikayla Harvey plus former TIBCO rider Jo Kiesanowski and Patrick Harvey, manager of the development team Black Magic Women.
