Summary of Leigh Gallagher's The Airbnb Story

#1 The story of how Airbnb came to be is well known in Silicon Valley. In 2004, two art school graduates, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, were part of a RISD-sponsored research project with the Conair Corporation. They designed hair dryers and other personal care products.

#2 The Conair internship marked the first time Chesky and Gebbia had worked together on a design project. They let their creativity run wild, but it wasn’t until they had to present their ideas that they realized just how wild they could be.

#3 Chesky was shipped off to Los Angeles to start his new life as an industrial designer. He was given a suit and a car, and his parents bought him a house in LA. But he soon realized that the job was not what he’d expected.

#4 In 2007, Chesky heard about a job opening at Method, a fast-growing home-products company with a focus on sustainability and award-winning packaging. He thought this could be his answer: it would get him to San Francisco, and the company’s values were more in line with his own. But in the end, he didn’t get the job.
