In April 2004, friends of 48-year-old Tommy Hope became concerned after not hearing from him for several days. When they went to his Camdenton, Missouri, home, they discovered Tommy brutally murdered inside. Investigators learned that Tommy’s troubled past, struggles with addiction, and complicated relationships had brought several people into his orbit who might have had reason to want him dead.

Then, in 2013, an unrelated stalking and harassment case produced a stunning revelation that finally gave investigators the break they had been waiting for.

Gallaudet University freshman Eric Plunkett was beaten and strangled to death inside his dorm room just weeks after arriving on campus. Months later, fellow freshman Benjamin Varner was found brutally murdered in the same dorm, leaving the close-knit university terrified that a killer was hiding among them.

Eric Plunkett and Benjamin Varner

17-year-old Jayne Salazar-Chavez was a bright, outgoing high school student with dreams of becoming an Air Force pilot. In November 2022, her Army boyfriend unexpectedly arrived at her Decatur, Georgia, home and discovered suggestive messages on her phone from another man. A heated confrontation followed, and later that night Jayne and her boyfriend returned to her house, where a gunman opened fire on their vehicle. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Jayne Salazar-Chavez. Jayne was killed, and her boyfriend was seriously wounded. As investigators dug into the case, Jayne’s phone, a photograph, phone records, and location data provided crucial clues and revealed a deadly love triangle that would ultimately lead authorities to the person responsible.

Jayne Salazar-Chavez

Starr Harris was a beloved mother of three, living in Drummonds, Tennessee, with her husband, Rick, and their blended family. On June 1, 2010, Starr disappeared from her home after speaking with several people, including employee Rickey Bell, about a dispute over his paycheck. That evening, her stepson found her body in the woods behind the house. Starr had been sexually assaulted, beaten, and strangled, and investigators believed she knew her killer because there were no signs of forced entry. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Starr Harris. Evidence eventually pointed to Rickey Bell, whose DNA was found inside a condom recovered near Starr’s body. Bell was arrested and charged with murder and sexual assault, while his brothers were later accused of attempting to intimidate a witness. At trial, prosecutors argued Bell used a gun-shaped lighter to overpower Starr and forced her into the woods after their argument. The defense suggested another employee could have been responsible.

Starr Harris

In October 2010, 25-year-old graduate student Michele Carson traveled to Las Vegas with her best friend, Vicki Rojas, for a girls’ trip. On November 7, Michele's abandoned car was found running in West Covina while Michele was missing. Her burned and partially buried body was discovered in the Las Vegas desert, and investigators determined she had been strangled. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Michele Carson. Suspicion quickly centered on Michele’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Justin Burns, after Vicki revealed that he had previously been violent toward Michele. Phone records showed the couple had argued shortly before her death, and Justin’s phone pinged near where Michele’s body was found before being turned off.

Michele Carson

Bob Lee, the Cash App founder and prominent tech executive, was stabbed to death in San Francisco in April 2023. Investigators focused on Nima Momeni after surveillance showed Lee leaving his sister Khazar’s apartment with him before the two stopped near the Bay Bridge, where Lee was fatally stabbed. Prosecutors argued Momeni killed Lee over anger surrounding his sister’s alleged drugging and sexual assault, while Momeni claimed he acted in self-defense after Lee attacked him with a knife. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the murder of Bob Lee. DNA evidence linked both men to the weapon, and Momeni was convicted of second-degree murder in December 2024. However, questions surrounding the confrontation, the competing accounts of what happened, and the circumstances that led to Lee’s death continue to fuel debate, leaving the full truth behind the killing a mystery.

Bob Lee

In November 2014, 22-year-old nursing assistant Carlesha Freeland-Gaither was abducted while walking home in Philadelphia. She fought back during the attack and deliberately left behind her phone and glasses, hoping someone would realize she was in danger. A witness saw the abduction, called 911 twice, and provided police with crucial information. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Carlesha Freeland-Gaither. Authorities eventually identified her abductor through DNA evidence linking him to the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in Virginia. On November 5, 2014, the FBI located him at a Maryland shopping center and rescued Carlesha, who was injured but alive.

Carlesha Freeland-Gaither

Jack Irwin was a 71-year-old Korean War veteran who lived a quiet, isolated life in a cabin on Mount Baldy, California. In 1999, he befriended Marcia Johnson and Judy Gellert, a couple interested in buying his cabin. The women quickly became close to Jack, eventually moved in with him, and gained access to his finances through a trust that would transfer his assets to them after his death. On September 13, 1999, Jack disappeared after Marcia claimed she dropped him at a train station with $5,000 and a change of clothes for a spontaneous trip to Seattle. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Jack Irwin. His neighbors and longtime friend Sandy Bailey immediately doubted the story, especially after Marcia and Judy stopped cooperating with investigators and began using Jack's money. The investigation eventually revealed that Marcia had made repeated withdrawals from Jack's accounts, bought vehicles, sold his property, and helped collect insurance money after his Mount Baldy cabin was destroyed in an arson fire.

Jack Irwin

18-year-old Amish teenager Samuel Hochstetler was accused of killing 28-year-old Rosanna Kinsinger in an Amish community near Rutland, Ohio. Rosanna was found dead in her trailer on March 13, 2025, after being last seen the previous day. Her death was ruled positional asphyxia, and investigators determined she had been raped and murdered. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss Samuel Hochstetler. This case became complicated by questions about Hochstetler’s understanding of his Miranda rights. His attorneys argued that his Amish upbringing, limited formal education, and language barriers prevented him from understanding the consequences of speaking with investigators.

Samuel Hochstetler

Denise Huber was abducted in the early morning hours of June 3rd, 1991, after her car broke down on the side of the freeway. Denise’s disappearance was one of the most sensational cases in Orange County, California. Three years later, her body was found under shocking circumstances. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the disappearance and murder of Denise Huber. Denise’s case was featured on America’s Most Wanted and Inside Edition, but the case went cold. On July 13th, 1994, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a possible stolen truck parked outside 37-year-old John Famalaro’s home in Dewey, Arizona. This call began the investigation into Famalaro that ultimately led to him being charged with Denise's murder.

Denise Huber

In 2003 and 2004, the DC area experienced multiple house fires with suspicious similarities. The fires resulted in two deaths and significant property destruction. An ATF-led task force identified the arsonist’s signature incendiary device, and the same DNA profile was found at several fires. 

Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the D.C. Arsonist. Thomas Anthony Sweatt was eventually linked to the fires through DNA evidence. He divulged to police implicating him in over 300 fires and more deaths than they knew about. But it was a series of letters that Sweatt wrote to a journalist that really gives insight into why he did what he did.
