For years, some law enforcement agencies have replaced the faces of traditional playing card decks with images of missing and murdered people and distributed those cards in prisons hoping inmates would come forward with information needed to crack these cold cases wide open. 

Now, audiochuck is dealing you in. 

Each week, we will be working with investigators and family members to bring you the details of some of the coldest cases from around the country in hopes that someone listening can finally bring these victims the justice they deserve.

The Deck

Our card this week is Zachary Michael Bernhardt, the 4 of Diamonds from Florida. 

Nearly 26 years after the eight-year-old vanished from his second-floor apartment in Clearwater, Florida, his whereabouts remain a mystery. Zachary’s case is Florida’s longest-running AMBER Alert. It is also a story we covered on Crime Junkie more than seven years ago.

In this episode of The Deck, we’re taking a fresh look at the evidence, including the 911 call Zachary’s mother made in the early morning hours of September 11 to report him missing. Could there have been clues that were missed? And could statements made by Zachary’s mother early on shed new light on a cold-case investigation that has stumped both detectives and Crime Junkies alike?

 • This is the last episode of The Deck, but our mission isn’t finished. We wanted to find a way to honor the show and its mission outside of podcasting, so we have created a $100,000 endowed fund in partnership with Crime Stoppers USA. With that, Crime Stoppers affiliates and programs nationwide will have access to funds for creating and printing cold case decks in perpetuity, so The Deck can live on.

Zachary Michael Bernhardt (4 of Diamonds, Florida)

Our card this week is Tawnya Dawn Knight, the 3 of Clubs from Kansas.

When 15-year-old Tawnya first vanished into thin air on a cold winter’s night in 1996, law enforcement considered her a runaway, despite her family believing otherwise. Months later, answers did come… tragic ones… along with plenty of questions about some of Tawnya’s friends and the circumstances of what happened to her that night.

Tawnya Dawn Knight (3 of Clubs, Kansas)

Our card this week is Mary Kathleen Rodriguez, the 5 of Spades from Texas.

For more than three decades, the question of who killed 26-year-old Mary Kathleen Rodriguez has hung over the town of West Odessa, Texas. Known as Kathleen to those who loved her, the live-in nanny was found brutally beaten to death inside the home of the couple she worked for.

Although the case has changed hands from one detective to another, the original facts of the case remain the same. There was no sign of forced entry, meaning Kathleen almost certainly knew whoever came to the door that night. And the one person who could have been on the other side of that door is still at large.

Mary Kathleen Rodriguez (5 of Spades, Texas)

Our card this week is Daniel Traina, the 8 of Diamonds from Florida.

49-year-old Daniel Traina was hard to miss. The Six-foot-four happy-go-lucky guy was always bopping around the West Palm Beach suburb of Lake Park. … well known to bartenders, store clerks, and neighbors. 

So it was mind-boggling when, in May of 2021, Daniel walked out of a 7-Eleven next to Florida’s busy Federal Highway … and vanished into the sticky, humid night… leaving behind NO clues. 

And as investigators have tried to retrace Daniel’s final movements and work their way through those closest to him, the case has taken on a distinctly South Florida feel. An ocean-side town, a 7-Eleven sign glowing in the dark, a cast of eccentric characters, conflicting stories, and a mystery that, five years later, still has everyone asking: how did someone who was so hard to miss vanish without a trace?

Daniel Traina (8 of Diamonds, Florida)

Our card this week is Ilene Misheloff, the Ace of Hearts from California. 

Thirteen-year-old Ilene Misheloff normally walked the same path home from school most days. And on January 30, 1989, all signs indicate she took that same route… and ALMOST made it home. But something… or someone intervened. And somehow, with all the traffic and houses that lined her route, no one saw the moment that Ilene Misheloff disappeared. 

In a case with so many leads and tips, investigators all these years later are left with one physical piece of evidence and a million questions… some of which they’re hoping you might be able to answer.

Ilene Misheloff (Ace of Hearts, California)

Our card this week is Benjamin Rosario, a Wild Card from Connecticut. 

Most cold case investigators will tell you that murder is a dirty business. But once in a while, there’s a murder so horrific that it could be mistaken for an urban legend. The unsolved homicide of Benjamin is one of those cases. 

It began on a summer evening much like any other for Benjamin. He left his apartment and headed off to his local bar just a few blocks away from home in Bridgeport’s East End. No doubt the neighbors expected to see him the next day, as they usually did – singing Spanish love songs on his porch. 

But that’s not how things transpired… Benjamin’s story would end with a grim discovery in the middle of a road just a five-minute drive from his apartment.

Benjamin Rosario (Wild Card, Connecticut)

Our card this week is Terrance "Konomi" Plummer, the Ace of Spades from North Carolina.

 It was Memorial Day weekend in 2010, and hot as hades in North Carolina, when 22-year-old Terrance “Konomi” Plummer Junior was found murdered in a crime so brutal—and so deliberate—that it stayed with everyone who touched the case—especially Lt. Jeff Locklear. What began as another homicide investigation became the one case he could never shake—his White Whale. More than a decade later, the answer would come from something investigators had possessed all along. And information they never knew existed—finally solving Plummer's murder and giving Locklear something he'd spent years chasing: closure.

Terrance “Konomi” Plummer (Ace of Spades, North Carolina)

Our card this week is Beverly Logan, the 10 of Clubs from Kansas. 

When Beverly Logan, a gentle, 56-year-old certified nurse’s aide, was found murdered in her kitchen, the Salina, Kansas Police Department found themselves on the hunt for her killer. They believe it might have been someone she knew. But over 18 years later, who that person is has remained a mystery.

Beverly Logan (10 of Clubs, Kansas)

Our card this week is Anita Carlson, the 10 of Spades from Minnesota. 

In late June 1987, the town of Bemidji, Minnesota, was gearing up for Independence Day weekend. Celebrations quickly turned to panic when Anita Carlson, a college graduate with hopes of working in TV production, went missing from her nighttime job at Pete’s Place, a convenience store at the intersection of Highways 2 and 89. 

By the end of the weekend, Anita had been found dead. Nearly 40 years later, investigators are still trying to figure out what happened that night.

Our card this week is Dorothy “Dee" Scofield, the 4 of Hearts from Florida.

Ocala Police Chief Mike Balken was just a toddler when 12-year-old Dee Scofield disappeared from a local department store. When he was a teenager, he remembers his parents bringing up the missing little girl from his hometown. Later, as a dad, it would cause him to lie awake at night, worrying about his own daughter. And down the line, as a new detective, it would continue to haunt him when he began investigating the case for himself. And today… even as a Chief of the entire department… he won’t rest until he knows what happened to Dee Scofield.
