Episode 40 In this episode I am talking to Earl Downing, Track and Field Coach & Mentor, who currently lives and works in the San Francisco area, coaching and mentoring high school, college, and post-collegiate athletes. Earl was born into a California family of 6 brothers and sisters. Growing up he always served as the de facto “rec director”. He played all sports competitively, including, baseball, football, track, swimming, golf, and tennis. While attending Yale Earl earned nine varsity letters playing on multiple championship football and track teams. The English degree led Earl indirectly to corporate life in tech sales, but all the while he managed to maintain a foothold in coaching and mentoring. Earl went part-time and then full time into coaching track and field in the 2000s, coming to embrace coaching fully as his life’s work. Influenced by his mother, the 'best athlete' he knew, Earl's story will inspire your thinking. Earl shares a great story of resilience and growth by one of his athletes, 'Max' the Can Do kid. Listen in for Earl's transformational coaching tips: 1. Get inertia working for you - make it your partner, not your foe 2. Jump on the 'escalator' to invest in moving forward 3.
