On Holy Saturday, April 5, 1980, investigators walked into a scene that could have been ripped from a horror film. Inside the sacristy of Toledo’s Mercy Hospital chapel lay the body of 71-year-old Sister Margaret Ann Pahl, sprawled across the cold floor. She had been strangled and stabbed repeatedly in the chest and neck, the wounds arranged in the shape of a cross.

In a grotesque act of desecration, Sister Margaret Ann was sexually assaulted with a crucifix, and her blood was collected in a golden chalice. The man accused of this atrocity was not a faceless predator, but a priest named Father Gerald Robinson. What followed was a case that touched on satanic ritual, sexual violence, homicide, institutional coverups, and whispers of a cult operating in the shadows comprised of priests, nuns, doctors, and even parents, all accused of committing unspeakable acts of cruelty. Robert Leroy Anderson, infamously known as “The Duct Tape Killer,” was a sexual sadist and murderer whose heinous crimes shocked the Midwest during the 1980s. Anderson kidnapped unsuspecting women, subjected them to brutal torture on a homemade “bondage board,” and ultimately bound and murdered them with duct tape. His horrific acts were fueled by a pathological need for domination and sadistic gratification, blending erotic desire with lethal aggression. Part 2 of this horrific case delves even deeper into depravity. Leonard Lake and Charles Ng, infamously known as The Snuff Film Killers and one of the most sadistic serial-killing duos in history, claimed between 11 and 25 lives. In at least two cases, they annihilated entire families, deliberately keeping women alive longer to serve as sex slaves in their underground “doomsday” bunker in California. Much of their atrocities were captured on tape, as the killers were keen to document their own twisted acts of cruelty and violence. This episode explores the complex psychologies of both perpetrators, as well as the dynamics of serial-killing teams. It is dark and profoundly disturbing — listener discretion is advised.

In the face of death, most would run. It’s human nature to flee, to cling to life. But on September 11, 2001, amidst the chaos of the crumbling South Tower, Welles Remy Crowther did the unthinkable as smoke choked the air, flames licked his skin, and the ground shook beneath him: he repeatedly charged back into the inferno to save others. Fueled by a force fear can’t touch, Welles guided the lost, comforted the wounded, and led the terrified to safety. Every step could have been his last, and he knew this. Yet Welles never wavered. NEVER. And in those impossible moments, he saved 18 lives. The man who faced death without flinching, who stood as a beacon of courage and selflessness in the darkest of times, was indeed The Man in the Red Bandana.

Few things are rarer, or more terrifying, than a serial-killing duo. And among them, Leonard Lake and Charles Ng (aka The Snuff Film Killers) stand out as one of the most sadistic partnerships in criminal history. In 1983, Leonard built a secret bunker in the hills of California to imprison women as sex slaves and record his twisted “philosophy tape,” which began as a doomsday/survivalist manifesto and eventually spiraled into videotaped kidnappings, assaults, and murders. Alongside fugitive ex-Marine Charles Ng, Leonard Lake unleashed a reign of terror that claimed between 11 and 25 lives, including men, women, and children - some of whose final moments were immortalized on tape.
