LISTEN | Morning Prayer - November 24, 2022 | Memorial of St. Andrew Dung-Lac, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs
"Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." - Mt 5:10
Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Andrew Dung-Lac (1735-1839), priest and martyr, and companions, martyrs. St. Andrew was one of 117 people who were martyred in Vietnam between 1820 and 1862. The last of the martyrs were 17 laypersons, one of them a 9-year-old, executed in 1862.
The blood of the martyrs of Vietnam -- the missionary clergy, the local clergy and the ordinary Christian people -- have watered the seed of the Christian faith in that country. Over the whole territory of Vietnam, about 130,000 Christians were killed in these persecutions. Over the centuries the names of most of them have been lost, but their memory is still alive in the Catholic community.
St. Andrew Dung-Lac and companions, pray for us and for the zeal to proclaim the Gospel with our lives whether in season or out of season.
