To the frustration of many, a lot of women’s clothes don’t have pockets. But why on Earth is that the case? Especially when men’s clothing seems to be full of pockets.

On Here For The History, Alice Loxton and Ben Henderson track the tumultuous and muddy history of women’s pockets. From capacious beginnings, through many fashion changes, to suffragette campaigning and societal expectations.

Alice and Ben unpick the surprising moments of pocket history that have contributed to the inconsistency of these sewn-in marvels today.

Lucy Worsley presents – Lady on Trial, a series in which courtroom drama meets history with a twist.

Lucy and her all-female team of detectives are re-opening court cases from the past - sensational trials dating from 1776 to 1944 - to see what justice looked like for women. We’ve met female defendants who have been judged, scrutinised, and silenced.

Lucy is joined by historian Professor Rosalind Crone and barrister Nneka Akodulu KC, who will discuss the cases of Christabel Russell, Connie Bolam, Georgina Weldon and sisters Lucy Meares and Sophia Richards.

Together, they’ll be asking if anything has truly changed in our modern courtrooms. What about our legal workforce: more women are entering the legal profession, but are they reaching the top as judges? And what are the ways in which the justice system could work better for women today?

Ladies in Court

Lucy Worsley presents a brand new series – Lady on Trial, where courtroom drama meets history...with a twist. 

Lucy and her team of all female detectives are meeting women from the past hauled before the courts for crimes big and small - from murder, adultery and theft, to civil disobedience and the shocking offence of not knowing their place! Were they guilty as charged? Or was their real crime simply being female? 

Lucy is joined by the leading criminal barrister Sasha Wass KC, who has worked on many high-profile cases including those of Rosemary West, Johnny Depp and Rolf Harris. With her help, and alongside historian Dr Rose Wallis from the University of the West of England, they’ll be exploring the case of sisters Lucy Meares and Sophia Richards who didn’t get much of a trial at all. But they did get a terrible, terrible punishment - 14 years transportation to the penal colonies of Australia for receiving stolen goods. 

Lucy and Sophia are poor, working class women. They have no lawyer and they make few headlines, but these two didn’t take their fate lying down - pushing back and showing agency when they could.

The team will ask why their punishment was so harsh. Did they get condemned for being female and working class? And even today, is it possible that some women still get judged more severely by the law than others?

Lucy Meares and Sophia Richards - Transported Sisters

In Lady on Trial, a brand new series for BBC Radio 4, Lucy Worsley and her all female team of detectives look at momentous legal struggles in history from a fresh and feminist perspective. 

This time, the legal whirlwind that is Georgina Weldon – opera singer, orphanage proprietor, spiritualist medium and litigant extraordinaire. One of the first women to bring a legal action in the English courts.

In 1878, Georgina’s estranged husband tries to have her committed to a lunatic asylum, merely on his say-so and ‘evidence’ supplied by two sympathetic doctors. Will the ‘madhouse keepers’ be successful in their attempts to capture Georgina or will she outwit them all – and see them in court?

To discuss Georgina’s predicament and her remarkable achievements, Lucy is joined by Charlotte Proudman, a pioneering feminist barrister and senior research associate at Jesus College, Cambridge. 

Together, they investigate the ways that the law can still be weaponised by perpetrators hoping to silence victims, why victims need greater protection in the justice system, and how individual legal cases can contribute to bigger picture reforms. They consider the bravery of women like Georgina, who bear huge personal and financial costs in the pursuit of justice.

Historian Professor Rosalind Crone from The Open University explains why a married woman like Georgina Weldon was so vulnerable under the Victorian Lunacy Laws and unpacks the impact of her audacious legal endeavours.

Georgina Weldon - Wrongly Committed

In Lady on Trial we hear the voices of women from the past who ended up in court charged with everything from murder, adultery and theft to civil disobedience. And Lucy is asking if their true crime could have been to be born female. Lucy is also telling the story of the fight for legal rights for women over three centuries, and wondering what still needs to be done for women to achieve true equality under the law.

This time Lucy takes us back to the Blitz to uncover the tale of defiant protestor Connie Bolam. We think we know the women of World War II - the Land Girls, the Wrens and women of Bletchley Park - but today Lucy reveals the surprising story of the first female conscientious objector to be sent to prison, a woman who refused conscription and said ‘no’ to war. What drives Connie to an ideology that risks her freedom? And what does Connie’s story tell us about women who protest today? 

To uncover this remarkable story Lucy’s joined by barrister Audrey Cherryl Mogan who defends modern-day protestors, and historian Dr Lyndsey Jenkins, an expert in the history of women’s activism. Together they piece together the tale of an unexpected rebel, and a living thread that links the women of the wartime peace movement to the women protesting global conflicts today.

Connie Bolam - Conscientious Objector

In Lady on Trial we hear the voices of women from the past who ended up in court charged with everything from murder, adultery and theft to civil disobedience. And Lucy is asking if their true crime could have been to be born female. Lucy is also telling the story of the fight for legal rights for women over three centuries, and wondering what still needs to be done for women to achieve true equality under the law.

In this episode Lucy explores the extraordinary case of Christabel Russell, whose decade-long fight for the legitimacy of her child leads to one of the most famous, and salacious, divorce cases of the 20th century. 

When, in the spring of 1921, Christabel Russell discovers she’s pregnant, her aristocratic husband John is appalled. He says this baby cannot possibly be his - it must be the consequence of his wife committing adultery because, he claims, their marriage is unconsummated. What follows is a sexually explicit courtroom drama that grips the nation and drives the outraged King George V to call for a change in the law.
 
Lucy wants to know what the Russell's lack of knowledge about sex revealed at this trial tells us about women’s lives a hundred years ago. How did this case contribute to the modernisation of divorce law? And how different is it for women going through the divorce courts today?

Lucy is joined by Professor Rosalind Crone from the Open University and by the solicitor Ayesha Vardag, described as Britain’s top divorce lawyer and ‘the diva of divorce’ who specialises in high-net-worth, high-profile divorce cases. Together they unpick ‘the case of the virgin birth’ to explore the ways divorce law in the 1920s discriminated against women, and to find out whether women are treated more fairly today.

Christabel Russell - Scandalous Divorce

Lucy Worsley continues the new series Lady on Trial, where courtroom drama meets history with a twist.

Lucy and her team are meeting women who find themselves at the centre of extraordinary legal battles, from the 18th century to the 1920s.

But in this episode, we’re putting something else on trial - the media itself. 

In our first four cases, Caroline Norton, Elizabeth Chudleigh, Audrey Jacob and Annie Kenney, aren’t just judged in the courtroom. They are also judged in newspapers, pamphlets and gossip columns.

Lucy is joined by journalist and broadcaster Anoushka Mutanda Doughtery, who hosts the BBC Sounds podcast Fame Under Fire, and Professor Rosalind Crone from The Open University. They’ll discuss if it's ever really possible - either then, or now - for a woman to have a fair trial when a case goes viral. And why, three centuries on, women are still being judged in the court of public opinion.

Trial by Media

Lucy Worsley goes to a glittering ball in Western Australia to investigate the sensational case of Audrey Jacob. It’s the 1920s, the era of bobbed hair and daring hemlines, and a ball at the Government House in Perth is in full swing. A young woman pushes her way through the throng of dancers, and before a ballroom packed with startled witnesses, she produces a concealed pistol and fires. Cyril Gidley, her former fiancé, falls dead at her feet. 

What follows is a courtroom drama that’s still debated to this day. Is Audrey a cold blooded murderess? Surely an all-male jury will find her guilty? 

Lucy is joined by historian Professor Leigh Straw and criminal defence barrister Laura Stockdale to untangle this case. They discover a story of passion, abuse and betrayal, with a ruthless defence lawyer who will stop at nothing in his pursuit of freedom for his glamorous young client.

Audrey Jacob - Murder on the Dancefloor

Lucy Worsley is back with a new series of Lady on Trial, where courtroom drama meets history - with a twist. 

Lucy and her team of all female detectives travel back more than a hundred years to meet women hauled before the courts for crimes ranging from murder, adultery, and bigamy, to the shocking offense of not knowing their place.

In this episode Lucy is investigating suffragette Annie Kenney. Born in 1879 near Oldham into a large, working-class weaving family, Annie works in a mill from a young age. But everything changes when she hears Christabel Pankhurst speak for votes for women in 1905. She quickly becomes involved in the campaign, giving rousing speeches and encouraging women to smash windows. Constantly in and out of prison, Annie endures hunger strike and is one of the first women released under the infamous Cat and Mouse Act.

With Lucy to explore Annie Kenney’s story is barrister Jennifer Robinson, author of Silenced Women: Why the Law Fails Women and How to Fight Back. Jennifer gives us insight into how Annie’s actions might be interpreted today, and how they have directly impacted current protest laws. 

Lucy is also joined by historian and author Dr Lyndsey Jenkins, who wrote a book on Annie Kenney, Sisters and Sisterhood: The Kenney Family, Class and Suffrage. 

Lucy wants to know how effective the suffragette movement was in gaining women the vote. What did militancy achieve? And in today’s tumultuous landscape, is our right to vote more fragile than we think?

Annie Kenney - Suffragette

In this episode, Lucy is exploring the extraordinary case of Elizabeth Chudleigh, maid of honour to the Princess of Wales and one of the 18th century’s most glittering and notorious celebrities. But at the age of 24 Elizabeth makes an impetuous, secret marriage which will haunt her for the rest of her life, and eventually land her in the dock in front of all 116 members of the House of Lords. She’s on trial for bigamy, a crime which potentially carries the death sentence.
 
Lucy wants to know how Elizabeth Chudleigh ended up on trial in the House of Lords. And what can her story tell us about marriage for women in 18th century Britain - and indeed, what can it tell us about women’s lives today? 

With Lucy to find out more about the case of Elizabeth Chudleigh is Baroness Helena Kennedy, one of the UK’s leading barristers and a member of the House of Lords since 1997. She’s also joined by Catherine Ostler, Elizabeth Chudleigh’s biographer.
 
Together they explore Elizabeth’s extraordinary and unconventional life, and how the uncertainty of Elizabeth’s marital status led to the legal codifying of marriage which remains largely in place today.
