In the early morning hours of June 6, 1996, a frantic 911 call came in from a quiet neighborhood in Rowlett, Texas. On the line was 26-year-old Darlie Routier, who said she and her sons had been stabbed by an intruder while they slept in the downstairs family room. When first responders arrived, they found a horrific scene—six-year-old Devon and five-year-old Damon lying on the floor with multiple stab wounds, while Darlie was walking around, bleeding from several knife injuries of her own.

As officers cleared the house and paramedics worked to save the victims, Darlie repeated the same story: a man in dark clothing had come into the family room, stabbed her and her children, then fled through the garage—leaving the knife behind. But as investigators began to process the scene and piece together what had unfolded in the Routier home, a new set of questions emerged—about Darlie’s version of events, the physical evidence, and what she did—and didn’t do—after the attack.

In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 29th, 2022, Boston Police officer John O’Keefe was found dead in a snowbank outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts. According to the medical examiner, O’Keefe had died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia. At first it seemed like a tragic accident, maybe a slip on the ice, a fall that ended in death. But as investigators dug deeper, things became far more complicated and Karen Read, O’Keefe’s girlfriend, became the center of the investigation. Evidence that there had been trouble in paradise in the romantic relationship began to surface, but so did other disturbing possibilities. What seemed like a domestic tragedy was quickly clouded by allegations of police corruption and cover-up, and an investigation that many believe was compromised from the start. What if the very people tasked with upholding the law were covering up the truth? Was John O’Keefe’s death a result of an angry lovers rage- or the collateral damage of a police force protecting its own? In this case, the line between justice and corruption becomes confusingly blurred. Evidence disappears, witnesses are silenced, and as the truth slowly rises to the surface, it may reveal a web of lies that’s more dangerous than anyone could have predicted. On December 22, 2024, 57-year-old Debrina Kawam was set on fire while sleeping on a train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn, New York. The suspect, 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, approached Kawam and ignited her clothing with a lighter. Despite efforts to extinguish the flames, Kawam succumbed to her injuries shortly after the attack.

On January 1, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack unfolded on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. At approximately 3:15 a.m. CST, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, drove a rented Ford F-150 Lightning into a crowd celebrating New Year's Day. The attack resulted in 15 deaths, including the perpetrator, and left 57 others injured, including two police officers.

Providence, Rhode Island, is the capital and the largest city in the state, known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and unique mix of old-world charm and modern urban development. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded in 1636, Providence was a refuge for those seeking religious freedom, which has laid the foundation for the city’s commitment to diversity and tolerance. The city is also home to some of the most prestigious universities in the United States, including Brown University, an Ivy League school, and the Rhode Island School of Design. With so many college students, you would expect Providence to also have a thriving nightlife, which can be found downtown where a variety of bars, clubs, and live music venues wait to welcome students who want to socialize and let loose in the evenings and on weekends. For such a large and busy city, you would also expect that Providence has its share of crime, and while the city does have some issues with violent crime, property crimes such as burglary and motor vehicle theft are far more common. But what happens when a basic carjacking turns violent for seemingly no reason whatsoever? In June of 2000, 20-year-old Jason Burgeson and 21-year-old Amy Shute found themselves in the crosshairs of five nefarious men who were prowling the streets of Providence, looking to get into trouble. Jason and Amy were spotted by a Providence police officer around 2:15 AM on June 9th; the couple was chatting in the parking lot of Tommy’s Bar and Grille in downtown Providence. Less than 12 hours later, their bodies were found slumped against hay bales at the Button Hole Golf course, located on the border of Providence and Johnstown, Rhode Island. They had been murdered in cold blood, and it was up to the investigators to figure out what had happened to them and why.
