Coffee Break Languages


Learn Portuguese with teacher Rafael and his student Ava. Each lesson is like going for a coffee with your friend who happens to speak Portuguese and is helping you learn in a relaxed, enjoyable way.


Coffee Break Portuguese does not focus on European or Brazilian Portuguese specifically: instead you'll be learning to use Portuguese in a way you'll be understood throughout the Portuguese-speaking world. Rafael, our main teacher, is from Brazil, but you'll also get to know Catarina from Portugal in our episodes.


Coffee Break Portuguese is not a simple series of "listen and repeat" audio programmes: in each lesson Rafael explains how the language works, helping Ava - and you - to manipulate the language and use it in practical situations. As a learner Ava asks questions, and makes mistakes, so through Rafael's explanations, corrections and pronunciation tips you'll build your confidence and begin to understand and speak the language.


You'll also build your cultural knowledge with the help of our cultural correspondent Catarina who shares information on cultural and linguistic points from around the Portuguese-speaking world.


In the same time it takes you to sit down and enjoy a coffee in your favourite coffee shop, you can make progress with your Portuguese. Our 20 minute lessons are perfect to keep you focused and let you develop your confidence in regular sessions.

Coffee Break Portuguese

Welcome to the final episode of our beginners' course in Portuguese. Coffee Break Portuguese is a language-learning podcast from Coffee Break Languages, for complete beginners. Throughout this 40-lesson series, teacher Rafael guides learner Ava from the very beginning of her Portuguese-learning journey and equips her (and you as the listener!) with the skills required to communicate throughout the entire Portuguese-speaking world. We'll learn to communicate confidently with native speakers through a range of topics associated with common travel situations such as introducing ourselves, ordering food and drink, checking into a hotel, and asking for directions. That's not all! We will also be joined by Catarina for our Cafezinho segments in which she'll share some useful language tips and cultural insights.

In this short introductory episode of Coffee Break Portuguese, teacher Rafael and learner Ava explain what’s to come in this series for beginners in Portuguese. We hear more about the types of topics that will be covered to help us when travelling to a place where Portuguese is spoken. We also get to know more about Rafael, Ava and Catarina and their language-learning backgrounds before learning about the term ‘Cafezinho’ and how this will be incorporated into our lessons.

Ready to learn some more Portuguese on your coffee break? In this fourth lesson, we'll be learning how to ask someone where they live and how to talk about where you live. We'll also be taking some of our knowledge from previous episodes a step further by learning how to use the verb ser ("to be") to talk about where other people are from, as well as how to form negative phrases.

Bem-vindos a Coffee Break Portuguese lesson 13! In this lesson we are expanding on what we learned in lesson 12, in which we were talking about how to order in a restaurant. We’ll be taking this a step further and talking about how to express likes and dislikes, and say what you can and can’t eat. We'll also learn some other useful phrases which will be useful in a restaurant scenario.
