Take your German to the next level with Coffee Break German Advanced. Join native speaker Andrea and learner Mark as they guide you through the intricacies of the language. This podcast is aimed at learners working at B1/B2 level and we'll be covering grammatical structures and topics appropriate to this level. In each episode Mark and Andrea will discuss a language point, and then you'll listen to a dialogue which features examples of the language point, helping you consolidate what you've learned.

Coffee Break German Advanced

In this first episode of Coffee Break GermanSeason 3, Andrea and Mark review the German Perfect Tense. We’ll take a look back at how the Perfect Tense is formed, and then we’ll find out how some irregular verbs are conjugated in the tense. To put this grammar point into practice, we also listen to a dialogue in German between Chris and Sabine, who are on holiday in Switzerland.

CBG 3.01 | A Review of the Perfect Tense | Wir haben uns schon lange nicht mehr gesehen

In this second episode from Season 3 of Coffee Break German, Mark and Andrea review the rules for the articles der, die and das. We also hear a dialogue between Gundula and Karl as they discuss an art exhibition before going on to have drink at a local Kneipe.

CBG 3.02 | The Gender of German nouns | Was für eine Gelegenheit!

In Lesson 3 from Coffee Break German Season 3, Mark and Andrea discuss the use of pronouns welche and diese before listening to a dialogue in which a tour guide shows a group of tourists around the city of Zurich. Be sure to take note of the use of the pronouns welche/welcher/welches and diese/dieser/dieses throughout the conversation.

CBG 3.03 | Using the pronouns welche and diese | Mit welchem Schiff fahren wir?

Lesson 4 of Coffee Break German Season 3 is all about the imperfect tense. Mark and Andrea focus on the conjugation of regular verbs and then listen to a diary entry where we hear examples of the tense in context.

CBG 3.04 | The imperfect tense | Wir arbeiteten pausenlos

Following on from the previous lesson of Coffee Break German Season 3, Mark and Andrea continue to look at the imperfect tense, this time, focusing on irregular verbs. The imperfect tense is used when writing or telling a story in the past so we take a look at a letter where we see many irregular imperfect verbs in context. We also hear some interesting vocabulary including the word Sprachlernaufenthalt.

CBG 3.05 | Irregular verbs in the imperfect tense | Ich aß täglich ein Eis

Welcome back to Coffee Break German Season 3! Join Mark and Andrea in Lesson 6 as they introduce the genitive case which conveys belonging and possession. In our story this week, we follow flatmates Jana and Karin as they tidy their apartment and discuss whose belongings are lying around! Listen out for examples of the genitive throughout the dialogue.

CBG 3.06 | The genitive case | Wessen Socken sind das?

In Lesson 7 of Coffee Break German Season 3, we are looking at the infinitive structure with zu but without um. Throughout the lesson we identify some verbs and expressions that require this structure. We hear some useful vocabulary, including the words: sammeln aufbauen and vorhaben.

CBG 3.07 | The infinitive with zu | Ich habe gehofft, früher hier zu sein

This lesson of Coffee Break German is about “connectors”. These are words that join clauses or phrases in a sentence. Join Mark and Andrea as they look at a variety of different connectors and see how they function in a sentence while learning their meanings. We also have the chance to see connectors in the context of a mother and daughter talking about a pyjama party in our dialogue.

CBG 3.08 | Connectors | Ohne zu meckern

In this lesson of Coffee Break German our hosts, Mark and Andrea, look at the infinitive structure with um zu which allows us to say “in order to”. We then hear this structure in the context of a conversation between characters Mike and Sandra who discuss Mike’s upcoming trip through Switzerland.

We’re back with a new episode of Coffee Break German Season 3 and another instalment of “Ein Zwilling studiert selten allein”! In this segment of the story Lucie and Marian are at home, enjoying the sun and the peace after the exciting celebration that was the prom. But suddenly, Lucie receives a long awaited e-mail! In this episode, among other things you will find a wide range of vocabulary used to describe the emotions and emotional responses of people. This is also a great opportunity to see the difference between “werden” and “bekommen” in German.
