23-year-old Welsh backpacker Kirsty Jones had her whole life ahead of her when she set out for a two-year trip across Asia, Australia and South America. Tragically, that trip was cut short just two months in when Kirsty was found strangled to death in her room at The Aree Guesthouse in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Thai police anticipated a quick arrest, but what followed was a media circus and bungled investigation that left the Jones family and young travellers everywhere desperate for answers.

When doting mother Leanna Harris arrived to pick up her 22-month-old son Cooper Harris from daycare in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 18 2014, she was shocked to find that Cooper wasn’t there. She soon discovered that her husband, Ross Harris, had made a fatal mistake, leaving Cooper to die in the backseat of his hot car after forgetting to drop him off on his way to work.

As details about Cooper’s death emerged, many questions arose. Was this another innocent family who had fallen victim to the phenomenon known as Forgotten Baby Syndrome, or was something more sinister at play?

23-year-old Jeff Gilham showed up on his neighbours’ doorstep in the early morning hours of August 28 1993, with a shocking claim. His older brother Christopher Gilham had just killed their parents, Stephen and Helen, and set their bodies on fire. In return, Jeff had stabbed Christopher to death.

On Thursday, October 10 2013, passersby noticed a distraught-looking teenage girl, crying and shivering outside of Dublin’s General Post Office building. When police officers approached the girl, she either couldn’t, or wouldn’t, talk. The mystery teenager – soon dubbed the GPO girl – was taken into care, and experts suspected that she was a victim of sex trafficking.

When attempts to identify the GPO girl failed, Irish investigators went public with the case, not realising they were just dealing with just the tip of the iceberg in a crime spree that spanned continents.
