When Europeans arrived in Newfoundland, beginning with John Cabot in 1497, the Beothuk saw their land taken, the animals they depended on hunted and harvested, and new diseases introduced that they had no immunity to.

By the 1800s, few Beothuk remained. One was Shanawdithit.

One of the biggest events in Canadian history was the arrival of the first reigning monarch to set foot on Canadian soil, King George VI with his wife Queen Victoria. From May to June 1939, the couple travelled 13,481 km around Canada where 75% of the Canadian population saw them.
