When Europeans arrived in Newfoundland, beginning with John Cabot in 1497, the Beothuk saw their land taken, the animals they depended on hunted and harvested, and new diseases introduced that they had no immunity to.

Canada's Sweetheart: Barbara Ann Scott

In 1906, Chief Joe Capilano travelled with a group of Indigenous to meet directly with King Edward VII over the issue of land claims and he would inspire his people to fight for their lands. He would also gain the ire of many white Canadians who saw him as a nuisance.
