For decades, off and on, New France was forced to use a unique style of currency when coins were in short supply. The money, made from playing cards, served an important purpose in the early years of the colony.

In 2027, the Bank of Canada will be releasing a new $20 banknote featuring King Charles, the Vimy memorial and more.

A Royal Event: The 1939 Royal Tour

It was the centrepiece of Canada's Centennial and while many doubted Canada and Montreal could pull it off, it turned into the most successful World's Fair of the 20th Century. At a time when Canada had a population of 25 million, there were over 50 million visitors to Expo 67.

Centennial Centrepiece: Expo 67

There were many landmark events in Canada's Centennial Year, but one of the most exciting was the Centennial Voyageur Canoe Pageant. For months, 10 teams from eight provinces and two territories, rowed from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta to Montreal.

It remains the longest canoe race in history.

The Centennial Voyageur Canoe Pageant

From 1909-1911, 1,500 Black Americans left Oklahoma and Texas for the Canadian Prairies. They would form vibrant communities despite the racism they faced, and the difficulties put in their way to enter Canada.
