The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by a quarter percentage point and penciled in an additional hike later this year, steps aimed at containing inflation that will test Chairman Kevin Warsh’s relationship with President Donald Trump.
 
“Today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the committee’s 2% goal,” officials said in a statement following the move Wednesday, referring to inflation. It was the US central bank’s first rate increase since July 2023.

Harvey Schwartz, Carlyle CEO, joined Bloomberg's Dani Burger on Open Interest and he said he doesn’t see the Federal Reserve repeatedly raising interest rates. David Sacks, chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science & Technology, says Anthropic and OpenAI should slow development of their most advanced AI models if they believe the technology poses serious risks, but argues they don’t need new regulation to do it. He pushes back against calls for antitrust exemptions and a broader regulatory framework, saying today’s frontier AI labs are setting the frontier themselves and do not need "anyone else's permission." He also underlines that any approach must account for competition with China, which is unlikely to join a global agreement to slow down AI development. Sacks spoke with Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow.

Bloomberg News' Ottawa Bureau Chief Brian Platt sits down with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney ahead of the country's first national investment summit in Toronto. Carney says he thinks it’s still possible for the US and Canada to reach a “mutually advantageous” deal that would reduce trade barriers. He notes that Canada is "ready to sit down and negotiate that and move it forward". Carney adds that he welcomed President Trump’s comments over the weekend that he believed the countries could reach an agreement fairly soon. He also discusses the need to strengthen AI guardrails and more.

Barclays CEO CS Venkatakrishnan says that the extreme specter of AI does not take away the value of its "mainstream capabilities," while speaking with Bloomberg's Dani Burger at the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference in New York. Venkatakrishnan says that his firm is working to train people for different jobs so they can prepare for a future where AI increases efficiency. He also says that Federal Reserve policymakers need to respond to "the persistency of inflation" and doing so on the front end would better help in the long run.
