On March 16, 2009, Rhonda Casto went on a hike in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge with her boyfriend, Stephen Nichols, only to never return home. Before Casto headed out on her hike, she joked to a friend that Nichols was either “going to propose or kill me”. Somewhere along the trail, she slipped or fell 150 feet to her death. “48 Hours" Correspondent Peter Van Sant reports.

In 2016, Nicole Vander Heyden went out with her boyfriend Doug Detrie and friends but never made it home. A day later, she was found beaten and strangled in a field. Wisconsin police used a host of digital tools to try to solve her murder. One device created an alibi. Her husband, Nick Kassotis, told family and friends that Mindi had died in a hospital, but he was later charged with her murder and sentenced to life without parole. Murder On The Cape

In August 2009, Olympian shot putter Dave Laut was shot to death. His wife, Jane Laut, originally claimed Dave was shot by an intruder, but when detectives discovered a gun hidden inside a grandfather clock, she changed her story, claiming she killed him in self-defense. “48 Hours" Correspondent Erin Moriarty reports.

Death of an Olympian

On June 1, 2002, Memphis police responded to an alleged attack outside a morgue. The victim was the medical examiner, Dr. O.C. Smith, who was found wrapped in barbed wire with a bomb strapped to his neck. Dr. Smith survived but was concerned his assailant might attack again. “48 Hours" Correspondent Troy Roberts reports.

Terror at the Morgue

When Dr. Linda Goudey was found strangled to death in October 1993, the main suspect was her boyfriend, Timothy Stryker, who was also a doctor. Nothing police found at the scene pointed directly to Stryker, and it took years for him to plead guilty, but it wasn't to murder charges. “48 Hours" Correspondent Richard Schlesinger reports.
