Vivarna, the Dinosaur, in the Desert of Horror

What would you do if you were barely two meters long, alone, and lost in a desert where everything wants to eat you? Vivarna knows the answer. Separated from the pack after an earthquake, the young super-raptor follows a herd of Argentinosaurus, the largest plant-eaters that ever walked the Earth, across the endless sands of prehistoric Patagonia. The giants tolerate the small carnivore as long as it keeps its distance. They are Vivarna's only hope of finding water, and the only protection from the predators that stalk the dunes. Then a single moment of hunger changes everything. An abandoned nest hides a giant spider. Its venom leaves Vivarna paralyzed and alone, at the mercy of spiked Agustinia and a hunting pack of Mapusaurus. By the time Vivarna can stand again, the wind has rebuilt the whole landscape. Beyond the last dune lies something no dinosaur has ever seen: a vast desert of black volcanic glass, blinding by day and without a drop of water. Told in Vivarna's own voice, quick, funny and fearless, this is a survival adventure that never lets go. The narrator speaks directly to "the people of the future," who will one day find the fossil in Neuquén, and brings a lost world vividly to life: a time before grass, before the Andes, when the Atlantic was a narrow sea and the Kawas Sea flooded the heart of South America. Young readers will face a deadly storm of flying glass, a desperate crossing through open water, a frenzy of giant sharks and a last-chance landing on an unknown island. Along the way they will discover real prehistoric creatures, from Argentinosaurus and Mapusaurus to Agustinia and giant Mesothelae spiders, and learn how dinosaurs hunted, drank, swam, hid and survived. Written by Argentine author Luis Benítez and translated into English by Elena Ţăpean, Vivarna, the Dinosaur, in the Desert of Horror blends pulse-pounding action with a genuine sense of wonder about the deep past of Patagonia, one of the richest fossil regions on Earth. This illustrated edition includes full-page artwork that brings Vivarna's journey to life. Beneath the action runs a quieter story as well: the courage of a small creature who refuses to give up, who learns to swim because there is no other way forward, and who discovers that patience and quick thinking can be as powerful as claws and teeth. Nearly every chapter ends on a cliffhanger, making it a gripping read-aloud and a natural choice for reluctant readers. Perfect for readers who love dinosaurs, animal survival stories and page-turning adventure. Open the book, and cross the desert of horror at Vivarna's side.
