Noveller
Morgan Andrew Robertson was born on the 30th September 1861 in Oswego, New York State.
As a teenager he joined the merchant service and stayed for over 20 years before working for a decade as a diamond setter in the jewellery business. With his eyesight beginning to weaken he took up writing and his stories were soon published in such periodicals as McClure's and the Saturday Evening Post.
Although he never had a prolific output his ideas were excellent and often foretold coming events. In 1898 he published the work he is best remembered for ‘The Wreck of the Titan, or Futility’ some years before the Titanic became a real-life tragedy.
In 1905, ‘The Submarine Destroyer’ was published’ based on his own idea of the periscope.
A later short story also prophesied a war between Japan and a sudden attack on U S warships, very much in the vein of Pearl Harbor.
Morgan Robertson died of heart disease and was found on the afternoon of the 24th March 1915, in his room at the Alamac Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was 53.
