The WIsdom of Fools & Other Short Stories

Margaretta Wade Campbell was born on the 23rd February 1857, in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania.

Her mother died during childbirth, and her father passed away shortly thereafter and she spent her early years being raised by her aunt and uncle, at their family estate, ‘Maple Grove’.

After studying art and design at Cooper Union in New York City she taught drawing and design at Normal College in New York.

She married the publisher Lorin Fuller Deland in 1880. Her literary career began by writing verses for his greeting card business.

In 1888 her novel ‘John Ward, Preacher’, was published. It was both a bestseller but also highly controversial for its indictment of Calvinism.

Deland continued to tackle difficult subjects in her later works including divorce and adultery. Although she was both independent and modern minded in many areas, she was not a supporter of universal female suffrage.

After her husband's death, she moved to France to perform relief work and was later awarded the Legion of Honour by the French government for her services.

Over her career she wrote over 30 books across poetry, short story collections and novels.

Margaret Deland died at the Hotel Sheraton in Boston on the 13th January 1945. She was 87.
