Ronald Arbuthnott Knox was born on the 17th February 1888 in Kibworth, Leicestershire.
He was born into an Anglican family; his father was the Bishop of Manchester and he himself turned out to be a brilliant scholar at both Eton and Oxford before being ordained as an Anglican priest. However, his spiritual path caused a stir in 1917 when he converted to Catholicism.
Ordained a Catholic priest in 1918, he served as the chaplain to Catholic students at Oxford University for thirteen years. It was during these years that he became a household name for both his sermons and his detective fiction. As well as being a founding member of the Detection Club he was the author of the ‘Ten Commandments’ of detective fiction, which set the standard for Golden Age mysteries.
Academically his greatest academic achievement was the Knox Bible, a monumental solo translation of the Latin Vulgate into elegant, modern English which was commissioned by the bishops of England and Wales.
Ronald Arbuthnott Knox died on the 24th August 1957 at Mells, Somerset. He was 69.
