At supper in the Abbey of the Redeemer, Watson apologises to the vicar – but Holmes immediately sparks the next debate on faith: why does the monastery own so many relics, yet not a single one of the Virgin Mary? Abbot Francis dismisses the idea of a bloodline of Mary as a conspiracy theory, and when asked about the arrival of the Saviour he answers only: "As soon as possible." In the night Holmes tears Watson from his sleep: the culprit must know the abbey's secret passages. While Lestrade snores, the two creep into the library with an oil lamp – and it is Watson's mockery of adventure novels that puts Holmes on the decisive trail. What lies behind the secret door…?
