The Remarkable Case of Davidson’s Eyes: A Man Whose Eyes Saw Across The World

Sidney Davidson has not vanished, and he has not gone mad in any ordinary way. His body remains in England, helpless among friends who can touch him, guide him, and speak to him. But his eyes show him another place entirely: a lonely shore, a ship offshore, penguins moving across the rocks, and a distant world that seems more real each time he opens his eyes.

What begins as a frightening affliction becomes something stranger than blindness. Davidson must learn to live with two worlds pressing against him at once. One can be felt. One can be seen. Neither will fully release him. H. G. Wells turns a laboratory accident into one of his most unsettling early scientific mysteries, where the most terrifying question is not whether Davidson is seeing things, but whether he is seeing too far.

H. G. Wells was born in Bromley, England, in 1866, and became one of the defining voices of early speculative fiction. His major works include The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, and The First Men in the Moon. “The Remarkable Case of Davidson’s Eyes” first appeared in the Pall Mall Budget in 1895, the same year Wells published The Time Machine, placing it at the beginning of one of the most important creative bursts in science fiction history.
