The Postmistress of Laurel Run

A widow, a way-bag, and a night ride over Burnt Ridge—Bret Harte’s classic Western short story, first published in 1891, blends frontier romance with a taut tale of honor and quiet heroism. In Laurel Run, Betsy Baker, the camp’s beloved postmistress and the steadfast widow of a fallen miner, keeps hope alive for forty rough men. When a San Francisco postal agent arrives to trap a thief skimming money from the mails, suspicion points toward a neighbor from the old days. With the town’s honor—and one man’s soul—on the line, Betsy mounts a daring dash through the California hills to outpace a stagecoach, outwit bureaucracy, and uphold a promise made to her husband.

Ross Blilie’s evocative narration captures the grit and gallantry of the Sierra camps, the jingle of spurs on a dusty platform, and the aching tenderness beneath Harte’s humor. The result is an intimate, high-stakes Western: swift, suspenseful, and unexpectedly moving.

Perfect for fans of classic Westerns, frontier romances, and character-driven short fiction, The Postmistress of Laurel Run delivers galloping suspense, sparkling dialogue, and the enduring power of decency.
