The Patient in Room 18

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. A raging storm. A hospital plunged into darkness. And in Room 18 — a room with a history of death no one likes to talk about — a wealthy patient lies murdered.

Nurse Sarah Keate has seen plenty in her years at St. Ann's Hospital, but nothing prepares her for the night everything comes undone. It begins with an uneasy dinner party hosted by the household of Dr. Letheny, thick with tension, ambition, and money troubles simmering just beneath polite conversation. By the time the storm breaks and the power fails, dread has already settled over the wards. When the lights come back on, a patient is dead in Room 18 — and the valuable radium treatment meant to save his life has vanished with the killer.

As Detective Lance O'Leary arrives to untangle a hospital full of secrets, jealousies, and suspects with something to hide, Sarah finds herself pulled deeper into the investigation than any nurse should be — closer to the killer, and closer to danger, with every clue she uncovers.

Published in 1929, The Patient in Room 18 was Mignon G. Eberhart's very first novel, and it made her a star overnight. Blending Gothic menace with the claustrophobic tension of a hospital at night, it introduced Sarah Keate — a sharp-tongued, fearless nurse-detective who would go on to headline six more novels and help define the "had-I-but-known" school of American mystery writing. Critics would soon call Eberhart "America's Agatha Christie," and this book is where that reputation began: atmospheric, twisty, and packed with red herrings that hold up nearly a century later.
