The Nose: A Surreal Satire in Modern English

A government official wakes one morning and discovers something impossible: his nose is gone. Major Kovalyov is horrified by its disappearance, but matters become even stranger when he discovers that his missing nose has taken on a life of its own. Dressed in an impressive uniform and carrying a rank higher than Kovalyov's, the nose moves through St. Petersburg as though it were an important man in its own right. What begins as an absurd personal crisis becomes a bizarre journey through a society obsessed with appearance, rank, bureaucracy, and social status. Kovalyov desperately tries to recover what he has lost, while the world around him responds to the impossible with an almost equally ridiculous mixture of indifference and official procedure. Nikolai Gogol's The Nose is a landmark of surreal satire and absurdist fiction, blending deadpan comedy, grotesque imagination, social criticism, and the strange logic of a world where the impossible can become perfectly ordinary. This Modern English Edition presents Gogol's story in clear, natural contemporary language while preserving its central narrative, comic absurdity, and satirical character. The audiobook also includes a short original companion, offering additional context and reflection after the story. Narrated by Luke Meinier Dalofin, this edition provides a contemporary entry point into one of Gogol's strangest and most influential tales.
