The Character Rewrite Audit

A Practical Revision System for Fixing Consistency, Voice, Motivation, Relationships, and Character Arcs in Fiction and Screenplays

Your plot works. The scenes move. The ending lands. So why do the characters still feel as if they were hired five minutes before the story began?

The Character Rewrite Audit gives fiction writers and screenwriters a practical way to diagnose that problem after the draft is finished. Rather than telling you to “make the character deeper,” it shows you what to check, what to track, and what to revise on the page.

If you have been looking for character development for writers that goes beyond personality questionnaires, this book focuses on the part that matters most: how a character behaves across an actual story. You will examine continuity, motivation, voice, relationships, internal conflict, pressure, flaws, strengths, backstory, subplots, theme, and the turning points that make change believable.

Use the book as a character arc workbook when a protagonist changes too quickly, a novel revision checklist when a draft feels almost right but still lacks emotional logic, or a scene-by-scene audit when you can sense a problem but cannot yet name it.

Inside, you will learn how to: - Build a usable character consistency checklist that catches contradictions before readers do. - Trace a character arc from starting state to earned transformation. - Separate surface goals from the motives that actually drive decisions. - Apply practical dialogue writing techniques so major characters stop sounding like the same person in different jackets. - Map relationships and track how trust, resentment, loyalty, attraction, rivalry, and power change over time. - Test characters under pressure without forcing them to behave for the convenience of the plot. - Use flaws and strengths as active story forces instead of decorative traits. - Integrate backstory without turning the chapter into a biography ambush. - Diagnose passive protagonists, idealized characters, exposition-only side characters, and other common character failures. - Organize the final pass with profiles, arc ledgers, feedback logs, scorecards, and revision templates.

The approach works across novels, short fiction, film, television, and other narrative forms. Writers interested in fiction writing craft will find a repeatable revision method, while readers focused on screenwriting character development can use the same tools to test motivation, scene behavior, voice, and relationship turns in a script.

The book also includes a practical 30-day revision plan and a final three-question coherence test, so you know when a character needs another pass and when it is finally time to stop tinkering and send the manuscript out into the world.

Characters do not need to be perfect. They need to be believable, specific, and consistent enough to surprise us for reasons that make sense.

If your draft has the bones of a good story but the people inside it still need a pulse, The Character Rewrite Audit gives you a structured way to finish the job.
