#1 The way you can go is not the real way. The name you can say is not the real name. Heaven and earth begin with the unnamed: the name is the mother of the ten thousand things. So the unwanting soul sees what’s hidden, and the ever-wanting soul sees only what it wants.

#2 The things of this world exist, and you can't refuse them. To believe that your beliefs are permanent truths that encompass reality is an arrogant assumption. To let go of that belief is to find safety.

#3 The wise leader would empty their minds, fill their bellies, weaken their desires, strengthen their bones, and keep people unknowing and unwanted.

#4 The Way is empty, used, but not used up. It is deep, yes! It is ancestral to the ten thousand things. It is quiet, and it is likely to endure. It is the child of before the gods.
