#1 To understand the rise of Trump, you must understand the history of America. To understand the history of America, you must understand Missouri. Missouri has long been a test case for corruption and injustice, and the country has often looked to it to show what direction it should go in.

#2 Missouri is known as the Cave State, because of the many caves that exist underground. They are a visual representation of how much time has passed there, and how little has changed.

#3 I thought about my children and my country as I drove out of Alton, skirting East St. Louis, Illinois, where in 1917 white mob violence against black laborers was so catastrophic that terrified locals mistook the trampling hordes for a natural disaster.

#4 St. Louis is a prime example of how an empire can be left behind, and how little people care about it. The city was the host of the 1904 World’s Fair, and its history is largely unknown outside of Missouri.
