#1 For many addicts and alcoholics, it is necessary to first reach a bottom before seeking treatment or recovery. This bottom may be a public event, such as a car crash, a DUI, or an arrest. Or it may be an internal event, when the despair of living with an active addiction outweighs all former joy, excitement, or relief that was once gleaned from the substance or behavior.

#2 I had to retrace my steps back to childhood, when I first learned to muffle my true feelings. I was the eldest, and when my parents got divorced, I took on the herculean task of keeping the family together. I began experimenting with ways to take the edge off of all that responsibility.

#3 People-pleasers, like me, do not care much for discomfort. It’s easier to brush these needs under the rug and not make waves, maintain the status quo, and then drop by the bar at 5 o’clock to unwind.

#4 he Rock mask is just one of many that may appear in reaction to trauma. The more we play our part, the more we confirm and perpetuate a negative identity. It can be difficult to defy our accepted role in the family or at school, but deep down, we want to succeed.
