#1 I was raised in the suburbs of New York City, and I was instilled with a deep Yankee skepticism towards the idea of a devil or demonic possession. I learned in school an American pride and patriotism, and I was later to reflect that I had an easy dismissal of Old World habits and beliefs.

#2 I became fascinated with psychosomatic medicine, the vagaries of our complex immune system, and the enormous power of our brains upon the state of our physiology. I filed away the incident in my mind, and when I returned home, I planned on going to medical school.

#3 The case of Loudun, France, in which several Ursuline nuns claimed to be possessed by demons, was a sensation. It remains controversial today. To draw the same simple conclusion as Lhermitte, one would need to discount a good deal of the contemporary records.

#4 I became interested in the mysterious psychic phenomena, and I decided to study them scientifically. I was not interested in the hostility I might receive from my colleagues for studying this topic.
