#1 The American id is made up of our sexual desires, which we are afraid to share or act upon. I surveyed thousands of Americans about their biggest sexual fantasies, which revealed the nature of the American id.

#2 A sexual fantasy is a mental picture that comes to mind while you’re awake that ultimately turns you on. It can be difficult to stop thinking about fantasies, because suppression isn’t a very effective way to take your mind off of them.

#3 We don’t seem to be very good at suppressing unwanted thoughts, whether they be about white bears or sex with white bears. If you weren’t already thinking about having sex with white bears, you probably are now.

#4 We know very little about what people today are actually fantasizing about. I conducted a survey to find out, and asked participants to write out their favorite sexual fantasy in narrative form and then sum up the main idea of that fantasy in a single word.
