#1 I was extremely shy as a teenager. I felt out of place in my homemade clothes, and the world seemed small to me. I saw the full spectrum of the human experience as an orderly at a Lutheran hospital in Fort Wayne.

#2 I became a surgeon because I wanted to help people. But I soon realized that much of what I did as a physician was too little, too late. I watched my fellow doctors work long hours, around the clock, rushing from patient to patient.

#3 I’d decided to check out reports of miraculous recoveries at a few healing centers in Brazil. I was sure that as soon as I scratched the surface, the shiny veneer of miracle healings would peel off, exposing the fraud underneath.

#4 I began to investigate the claims that some cases of spontaneous remission were occurring, and found that they were everywhere. They were considered outliers, but they were actually hiding in plain sight.
