#1 I was the only one who wasn’t crying as the bus full of women inched its way through Tehran traffic toward Khomeini’s house.

#2 Ruhollah, an impoverished clerical student from the village of Khomein, had been twenty-seven when he asked for the hand of fifteen-year-old Khadija Saqafi. Her father, a prominent ayatollah, didn’t think much of the match, but Khadija felt differently. She had glimpsed her suitor when she brought him a glass of tea.

#3 The wearing of the chador by Iranian women was a result of the influence of Khomeini, the leader of the revolution against the shah in 1978. He had spoken with a voice that drew its authority from the earliest days of Islam.

#4 I was invited to a conference in Tehran hosted by the Women’s Society of the Islamic Republic of Iran, titled Aspects of Imam Khomeini’s Personality. I was the only Western woman there. The dress code was basic black, and Chadors were only the finishing touch over long pants, socks, and tunics.
