#1 I won a travel competition with my husband Mark in 2010. We were awarded a six-month trip around the world to review the most exclusive wedding and honeymoon destinations. We were required to write reviews of each place, write a monthly newspaper column, and make promotional videos of each destination.

I spent my waitressing money on personal development seminars like Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within weekend, where you walk on hot coals surrounded by hundreds of people shouting and pumping their fists. I came out of those seminars extremely fired up, but with no idea of how to direct that enthusiasm into anything practical.

#3 If you ask, and then a perfect opportunity presents itself, you have to say yes. If you feel a sudden sense of excitement and enthusiasm, do what it takes to take action.

#4 The first day of the course, Karen asked us to write down our ideal day. I’d never done this exercise before, and I can honestly say that it changed my life. I wrote down a day unlike my actual reality, but it sounded ridiculous and incredibly unrealistic.
