Summary of Ann Dowsett Johnston's Drink

#1 I took a geographic cure to fix what I thought was wrong with my life, and the cure failed. I was optimistic about my new position as vice principal of McGill, but I grew to dread that behemoth of a desk.

#2 I was in charge of mobilizing the largest fund-raising effort in McGill’s history. I was used to long hours, and I had no real friends in the city. I would spend many nights behind the Bronfman desk, reviewing documents and emails.

#3 I had just gotten engaged to Jake, a writer living thousands of miles away. We had spent the last decade together, summering in Jake’s octagonal wooden houseboat in the wilds of northern Ontario, wintering in each other’s homes.

#4 I began drinking at work, because I was lonely. I was drinking because I was anxious. I was drinking because I was taking my work too seriously. I was losing my voice.
