George Warwick Deeping was born on the 28th May 1877 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England.

He was born into a family of physicians, and studied medicine and science at Trinity College, Cambridge. He practised briefly as a country doctor before abandoning medicine to pursue a full-time writing career.

However, during the slaughter and casualties of the First World War, he returned to medical duty, serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

Initially a writer of historical romances, Deeping shifted to contemporary fiction after the war. He achieved enormous global success with his 1925 international bestseller, ‘Sorrell and Son’, a moving story of a father navigating postwar hardships to raise his son.

Over his career, he published more than 60 novels as well as collections of short stories.

Warwick Deeping died on the 20th April 1950 in Weybridge, Surrey, England. He was 72.
