Socialism Utopia & Scientific

In Socialism: Utopian and Scientific, Friedrich Engels presents a concise and influential introduction to the ideas that shaped modern socialist thought. First published in 1880, this landmark work examines the development of socialism and contrasts the idealistic visions of early “utopian” socialists with what Engels calls “scientific socialism.”

Engels explores the ideas of influential thinkers including Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier, and Robert Owen before turning to dialectics, historical materialism, and the economic forces he argues drive social change. Drawing heavily on the theories developed with Karl Marx, he examines capitalism, class divisions, industrial production, and the historical development of society.

Clear, provocative, and deeply influential, Socialism: Utopian and Scientific offers listeners an important window into nineteenth-century political and economic thought. Whether approached as a work of political philosophy, history, or socialist theory, Engels’s classic remains essential for understanding the intellectual foundations of Marxism and the development of modern socialist movements.
