In *Protection and Communism*, Frédéric Bastiat subjects two apparently opposed economic doctrines to a common liberal critique. With characteristic clarity, irony, and reductio ad absurdum, he argues that protectionist tariffs and collectivist legislation alike substitute political coercion for voluntary exchange, privilege organized interests, and obscure the costs imposed on the wider public. The work belongs to the tradition of nineteenth-century French political economy and the polemical essay, extending Bastiat's method of exposing "what is not seen": the employment, prosperity, and liberty sacrificed when governments manipulate trade or property. Its compact argument is less a technical treatise than a lucid intervention in the ideological conflicts surrounding industrialization, socialism, and the expansion of state power. Bastiat (1801–1850), a French economist, legislator, and celebrated advocate of free trade, wrote amid fierce debates over tariffs, class interests, and emerging socialist programs. His experience in the French Chamber of Deputies, together with his engagement with the French free-trade movement, sharpened his suspicion of policies presented as benevolent while benefiting concentrated minorities. His broader writings sought to make economic reasoning accessible without sacrificing analytical force. This book is recommended to readers interested in the intellectual history of liberalism, the origins of anti-protectionist thought, and enduring debates over state intervention. It offers a concise historical argument whose questions remain relevant wherever political power is used to redistribute economic opportunity.
