Parvathy: The Tale of an Elephant

Elephants are cute and intelligent animals. How would you feel if your father were to give you a four-year-old elephant calf as a birthday gift? No doubt, you'll be enthralled. Bhagyalakshmi, Bhagyam for short, receives such a gift on her seventh birthday, and she is over the moon. Bhagyam, an only child, spends her time playing with Parvathy, the elephant calf. She feeds her pet, helps the mahout bath her, and rides on her to the river. When Parvathy saves a little boy from drowning, the municipality gives Parvathy a cash award of Rs. Ten thousand, the first-ever award to any animal for bravery, which Bhagyam receives on her pet's behalf. Bhagyam teaches her pet to write and count.
