Enjoy and Fully Understand 25 haiku by 夏目漱石(なつめ そうせき)Natsume Sōseki (1867–1916)

Everyone knows Natsume Sōseki the novelist — 吾輩は猫である, 坊っちゃん, こころ — the man whose face was on the 1000 yen note. What most people don't know, even many Japanese, is that Sōseki was also a serious haiku poet. He studied under 正岡子規 (Masaoka Shiki), the father of modern haiku, and kept writing poems throughout his life — from his years as a restless English teacher in Matsuyama and Kumamoto all the way through his final years as Japan's most celebrated author.

His haiku aren't what you might expect from a famous novelist. There are no grand pronouncements. Instead, you get a cat curled on a lap as the year ends, a mosquito flying out of a temple bell, and a newborn daughter compared — lovingly, if bluntly — to a sea cucumber. They are gentle, observant, and quietly human.

This book is designed to help beginner to intermediate students of Japanese learn vocabulary and grammar while uncovering the layers of meaning that translations alone can't capture.

The collection features twenty-five haiku, each presented with the original Japanese and furigana, multiple English translations (ranging from literal to figurative), and detailed vocabulary breakdowns with definitions and grammar notes. Every haiku also includes an explanation written in both Japanese and English, seasonal word (季語) identification, and a deeper analysis exploring the cultural, historical, and poetic context behind the poem. QR codes throughout the book let you instantly hear native recordings of each haiku and commentary by scanning with your phone.

What You'll Get:

Read and understand twenty-five of Natsume Sōseki's haiku — many rarely discussed in English. Perfect for beginner to intermediate students of Japanese. Multiple translations per haiku — from literal to interpretive — so you can see how meaning shifts across renderings. Definitions for every word, along with explanations of key grammar points, classical forms, and haiku elements. Cultural and historical context for each poem, including seasonal references and connections to Sōseki's life and literary world. Explanations in both Japanese and English — so you can study the commentary itself as reading practice. About the Poet:

夏目漱石 (1867–1916) is widely considered Japan's greatest modern novelist, but his haiku reveal a side of him his novels can't — intimate, funny, unguarded. A lifelong student of 正岡子規, Sōseki wrote haiku that zoom in on small moments and let them speak for themselves: a dragonfly landing on a shoulder, the guilty pleasure of sleeping in on New Year's Day, the quiet weight of a departing year. These twenty-five poems offer a direct glimpse of the man behind the literature — seventeen syllables at a time.
