In the centre of Rudyard Kipling's novel Kim are two men: a boy on the verge of adulthood and an aged ascetic lama. The boy, Kim, is born in India, but he is white, a sahib. However, he is orphaned and thus becomes an apprentice to the lama. Simultaneously, he is also trained by the British intelligence service. Although Kim desires to participate in the great political games of imperialism, he is spiritually connected to the lama, and his aim is to unite the two factions. Kim [1901] is one of Rudyard Kipling's most prominent novels, a vivid portrait of a bustling India.
