Kamala Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, toShyamalaGopalan , a scientist from India, and Donald Harris, an economist from Jamaica. From a young age, Harris was influenced by the values of social justice and equality, shaped by the experiences of her immigrant parents and the vibrant political atmosphere of California in the 1960s and 1970s.
During her youth, Harris witnessed the Civil Rights Movement up close and wasinspiredbyleaderssuch as Thurgood Marshall and Shirley Chisholm . In 1986, Kamala Harris entered Howard University , one of the most prestigious historically black universities in the United States, where she studied political science and economics. After graduating from Howard, Harris continued his studies at the University of California , Hastings College of the Law, whereheobtainedhis Juris degreeDoctor in 1989. During her law student years, she began to forge her legal career, dedicating herself to public service and the defense of civil rights.
