At the beginning of the 20th Century India was the Crown jewel in the British Empire. As publishing expanded via a trove of mass market periodicals, magazines and cheap paperbacks, local genres began to evolve.

Amongst its proponents S Mukerji was a writer and collector of ghost and macabre tales of the supernatural.
