Challenging the Beast, Challenging Empire: A Literary-Critical, Comparative, and Theological Reading of the Primeval History

The relationship of Primeval History to the ancient Near Eastern world has long been the subject of academic interest. In this unique study, Dr. Tamás Czövek offers a new perspective on Genesis 1–11 through the previously unexamined lens of kingship, city, and cult. Utilizing a comprehensive, comparative exegesis of the Primeval History with Mesopotamian literature, Dr. Czövek compellingly argues for a reading of Primeval History as a counter-narrative to that of Babylon – one that criticizes Babylon’s hierarchical society, imperial politics, and culture – and illuminates the way Primeval History subverts shared themes to tell a new story of the image of God in humanity. Biblical scholars will be enriched and challenged in this timely work, bringing deep-rooted insights from these ancient communities into relevance for today.
