At 1:47 AM on February 1st, 2026, a doorbell camera in the Catalina Foothills region of Tucson, Arizona transmitted disturbing images. It showed a masked figure wearing gloves, dark clothing, and a backpack approaching the front door. He had a gun holstered awkwardly near his groin and tried to obscure the camera before destroying it.

Hours later, the home's lone occupant, 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, would fail to appear for her church's virtual Sunday service. Members of the church would contact Nancy's relatives, who were at her house within an hour. There, they discovered all of Nancy's important belongings inside and the back doors propped up, but could find no trace of her...

On 24 November 1994, a warm summer evening in suburban Charlestown, New South Wales, a sixteen-year-old girl left a shopping center and began walking down a quiet, tree-lined street toward her aunt's house. She was carrying a plastic shopping bag with a new black dress and a pair of stockings inside, an outfit she planned to wear to her very first live concert just days away.

Somewhere along that road between the shopping center and her aunt’s front door, 16-year-old Gordana Kotevski was seized by at least two men, forced into a white Toyota Hilux, and driven away. Her family just inside the house heard her screams. She has never been seen again...

On 10:54 AM on 28 February 2001, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck western Washington. The epicenter was in the southern Puget Sound, but the quake originated roughly 32 miles beneath the surface, mitigating some shaking. While hundreds were injured and a woman even died as a direct result of the quake, many believe that the region got lucky that Wednesday morning and that the total damage (~$2 billion) could have been a lot higher had the quake's hypocenter been closer to the surface.

This region of the world is no stranger to the earth's whims. Lying in the shadow of the looming Mt. Rainier, there are a couple of active faults - the Seattle Fault Zone and the Cascadia Subduction Zone - that seem poised to devastate in the not-so-distant future...

On April 8th, 2026, 62-year-old Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, Amber Costello, Jessica Taylor, and Megan Waterman. He also admitted to an eight murder that he hadn't yet been charged with: 34-year-old Karen Vergata, who had been known as "Fire Island Jane Doe" for years...

The Long Island Serial Killer (Update: April 2026)

"When we told prosecutors we were innocent, they put us in prison for life. Now when we plead guilty, they set us free."

On 19 August 2011, three men - Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. - were transported from their respective facilities to a courthouse in Jonesboro, Arkansas. They were there to plead guilty to a crime they had spent the better part of two decades denying. At the same time, they were asserting their innocence and obtaining their freedom in an unusual legal maneuver called an Alford plea.

What led up to that decision was the culmination of years of painstaking progress. What had started back in 1996 as a single HBO documentary had become a movement by 2011 heralded by celebrity backers and advocates pushing new DNA evidence. Yet at the end of the day, three men regained their freedom at a cost while questions continue to linger about the deaths of three boys...

In June of 1993, Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky were two young filmmakers coming off their acclaimed breakthrough and looking for a new opportunity. That's when an executive from HBO told them about a new story that had just taken place down in West Memphis, Arkansas, in which three teenagers were accused of killing three eight-year-olds. They assumed it would be a pretty straightforward story of youth violence.

They spent their first few weeks with the victims' families and interviewed the prosecutors and police officials about the case. But then they met the defendants, everything changed for them. Over the next ten months, they were allowed unprecedented access to the courtroom, the families, the defendants, and the investigation...

West Memphis Three (Part Four: Trials & Tribulations)

“I think I was the closest thing he could come to conceiving of what he thought a Satanist would look like. All black was the only thing I ever wore. Ridiculous hairstyles. I was a stupid teenager.”

On May 6th, 1993 - the same day the bodies of three boys were found in West Memphis, Arkansas - a juvenile probation officer was standing at the crime scene as authorities gathered to process the evidence. In an offhand remark, he said that a local youth, Damien Echols, had "finally killed someone."

The bodies hadn’t been autopsied yet. No evidence had been processed and no interviews had been conducted. No suspects had been identified through any investigative means whatsoever. And a law enforcement officer was already naming a suspect at the crime scene. Not because of anything connected to this crime, but because of who that person was and what that person was rumored to believe...

West Memphis Three (Part Three: The Devil In West Memphis)

"One of my officers found a tennis shoe, and, inquisitive, he just jumped in the water and felt one of them."

On the evening of May 5th, 1993, three eight-year-old boys - Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers - went out to play in the neighborhood around Robin Hood Hills in West Memphis, Arkansas. They were supposed to be home by dark but never came home. By 8:00 PM, their families had contacted police and were beginning to search for them with flashlights, but held back by the creeping darkness and the elements.

The following morning, the community gathered to help participate in the search. Hours passed without any sign of the three. But at approximately 1:45 PM, a juvenile parole officer peered over the steep bank of a water-filled ditch near where the woods bordered the nearby Blue Beacon Truck Wash. He spotted something in the water...

West Memphis, Arkansas was, in a lot of ways, the kind of American small town that people often romanticize. And like all romanticized places, it had its dark spots - such as poverty, underfunded social services, domestic troubles, and a police department under investigation by the Arkansas State Police for suspected mishandling of drug task force money. It was not a perfect place. But for the children who lived there, it was the only place.

In the spring of 1993, three eight-year-old boys lived in that world. They rode their bikes through the neighborhood and explored the woods behind their houses. On the evening of May 5th, 1993, those three boys went out to play and never came home...
