Cannibals All! or, Slaves Without Masters (1857) is one of the most notorious antebellum defenses of slavery, cast as a sweeping attack on liberal capitalism and "free labor." Written in a polemical, aphoristic, and often satirical style, the book inverts reformist language to argue that Northern wage workers are exploited more cruelly than enslaved people. Its importance lies less in its truth than in its stark revelation of the intellectual machinery of proslavery ideology before the Civil War. George Fitzhugh, a Virginia lawyer, social theorist, and leading Southern apologist, wrote from within a slaveholding society anxious about abolitionism, industrial capitalism, and democratic individualism. Influenced by reactionary social thought and contemporary debates over political economy, he sought to portray slavery as a paternalistic social order. His arguments reflect the fears and contradictions of a region attempting to defend human bondage as a universal social principle. This book is recommended for readers studying American slavery, political ideology, labor history, or the rhetoric of reaction. Read critically, it offers a disturbing but indispensable window into how injustice was rationalized by educated defenders of the Old South.
