Blunder Enlightening

Dropped onto a newly discovered world to study its natives before traders and missionaries arrive, a young field researcher and his pregnant wife find their mission stalling from the very first day. The natives—small, oiled, insectile creatures with an unmistakable gift for painting—simply ignore them, treating the human pair as no more interesting than the weather.

As supplies dwindle and isolation grinds at their nerves, the husband grows desperate to force some kind of contact. Every attempt backfires, and a tragic accident leaves him certain the natives will soon come seeking revenge.

What follows is a study in humility, improvisation, and the peculiar, embarrassing traits that separate a rational being from a creature of pure instinct—and the possibility that a blunder may be the only language worth speaking.
