A Psychological Shipwreck

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. In the summer of 1874, a young American merchant sails from Liverpool to New York aboard the ship Morrow. Among the few passengers is a quiet young woman travelling with her guardian, and from the first moment he sees her he feels an inexplicable bond, as if some part of her life had always belonged to him.

One evening, reading in the cabin, he looks up and their eyes meet. What follows is a sensation of drowning, of dark water closing over them both. And when he learns the truth, weeks later and in another city, it will unmake everything he believed about where he was that night.

First published in 1879, A Psychological Shipwreck is one of Ambrose Bierce's strangest and most elegant tales. It is a brief story of doubled lives, lost ships and the thin place between dream and death, from the master of American dark fiction.
