A Dreamer's Tales

Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett was born on the 24th July 1878 in London.

He was educated at Eton and then Sandhurst which led him to service in both the Boer War and then later in World War I.

He was also a champion chess player, a sharpshooting expert, and a versatile sportsman.

Writing as Lord Dunsany, he published over 60 books, across novels, plays, essays, and poetry. In 1905 his collection, ‘The Gods of Pegāna’, created an entirely invented pantheon, heavily influencing the likes of J R R Tolkien, H P Lovecraft, and Ursula K Le Guin.

He wrote mainly with a quill pen at his ancestral home, Dunsany Castle, in County Meath, Ireland.

Dunsany’s plays became huge successes on both Broadway and in London’s West End. Above this he leaves a legacy as a foundational figure in high fantasy, myth-making, and weird fiction.

Edward Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany died on the 25th October 1957 in Dublin, Ireland. He was 79.
